Be advised to wipe it down inside and out for dust and then heat it up empty for about 15 minutes as it may smoke a bit as it heats up for the first time. First to note that it is built extremely solid. I've looked at every oven like this at Costco, WalMart, Sears, etc and not one had the solidity that this one has. The handle on the West Bend is rock solid as is the entire build quality of this model. Many other model's handles flex up and down considerably during use and I question how long they would last. We also like the analog dials rather then digital (and easier to see if you use reading glasses and want to avoid hard-to-read digital displays). Low tech adds up to ease of use and less that can go wrong over time! It also means more $$ went into the rest of the oven design and quality, not into hight tech controls! Also to note, YES!, this is a convection model which allows faster cook times and much more uniform heating across the oven. The oven convection fan and motor do emit a hum of sorts, but, nothing that is loud and annoying. We've baked chicken in it and tried the toaster function as well. Cook times were fast for the boneless chicken and the texture was perfect, still moist and not charred like some smaller ovens can do since the meat, etc., is too darn close to the cooking elements in those smaller models. Convection also allows lower heat output and more heat element cycling (not on 100% of the time) to allow reduced electricity consumption.Toast takes no more time then a normal toaster and browns very uniformly across the oven. The oven's profile is smaller then we expected (a plus for a limited counter spot) and yet it will hold a 12" pizza pan or a 5X9 cook pan. The oven seems well insulated as well and does a great job at holding in the heat where it needs to be. We haven't tried the rotisserie yet, but, the hardware included is like the rest of this oven, well made and solid. With very limited use as of yet, my feeling is that we'll continue to praise this model as we use it more and that it deserves the high ratings most owners gave it. It'll do it all and use only 110V in the process versus that 220V oven you use for a small item that could go in the West Bend instead. It's a keeper!

To toast bread it takes two or three cycles on the darkest setting (placing the bread back in the toasting slot). Even after the two or three attempts the bread is unevenly toasted. I sure wish I hadn't wasted the money on this item.

It seems a lot of thought went into the design ,for example the nice weight cooking pan has a separate lift bracket with stay cool handles. However, if the top part were just 2 inches taller it would have more functional use. I cooked Ore-Ida oven fries in it on the supplied non-stick pan and they were quickly cooked perfectly with an enhanced potato taste. Then later I cooked manicotti in a small and shallow rectangle glass Pyrex dish. Part of one of the top elements had burned melted cheese on it. Both items cooked much quicker than if I had used my regular sized convection oven or my convection microwave oven since no warm up period was required. However, it seems everything has to be place only on the cooking pan which is about the size of a medium frozen pizza. This greatly limits the everyday use of this oven. I had hoped since my toaster-oven recently died that this item would take it's place, but that is not the case. I will probably still use it for fries and frozen pizza, but if I'm baking cookies, a cake or a pie then I'll use my microwave or full sized oven.
03/07/11 update:
I happily use this appliance several times a week for multiple reheating and cooking. I was short sighted in thinking it was not sized properly for frequent use, although I still think making it a couple of inches taller would be beneficial. If you purchase Phillips' crab cakes, you can cook them frozen to perfection w/o adding any cooking oil or butter. When I cook fresh fish on this I do add butter and seasoning. When and if this appliance dies I will replace it.

No matter what you put in (bagels or bread), no matter what setting number, both slots do the same thing. If you look into the toaster, all the elements heat up properly, so I cannot figure out why it does not work. It toasts fast, but that doesn't matter much when it doesn't toast properly. I returned it.

THIS one, on the other hand was very good. Door closed all the way. No guessing when my toast will be done. Stainless steel frame.
Digital readout is a bit dim, though. But has cooked toast, pizza, reheated things without a hitch. Have not tried BAKE function yet.
If it holds up longer than the other B&D (6 month life), it will be a winnner!

Waring Pro TCO600 1500-Watt 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven Review

(More customer reviews)When I first started to look for a replacement for my old (very, very) Black and Decker SpaceSaver toaster oven I had a long list of requirements. As I hadn't shopped for a toaster oven in about 30 years I didn't realize that those stipulations were wildly optimistic. After months of frustrating research (and one very bad purchase), I was left with two show-stopping requirements: no Teflon (or Teflon-like) coating because of the fumes that emits, and an "I am done" sound that didn't shatter my eardrums and cause my dog to run away from home.
The TCO600 meets both of those requirements. There is no Teflon coating - just bare metal. (I would have preferred the old style blue/black enamel like my old toaster oven had and like my real oven has, but, as I said, I gave up on most of my "prefers".) The sound when the timer (60 minute) is complete is one "ding". That I love.
I'm pleased with the unit so far. The convection fan is quiet, the oven heats to the temperature set. I've used it to bake a few things and was satisfied. Haven't yet used the broiler. The toaster is not the most convenient to use, and you cannot choose a setting and leave it there. (One must turn the timer past 20, then turn it to whatever you think might be the right setting for the bread and wait for the timer to turn it off.) The toast was not bad at all.
It is nice looking, chrome front, painted silver metal along the sides and top. That chrome is going to show every fingerprint that touches it, but it's wiped clean easily enough. It does get hot, as toaster ovens do, but it hasn't caused any problems. The crumb tray is very accessible in the front of the unit. I do like the analog dials rather than pushbutton digital stuff.
It's a bigger footprint than I was looking for. My old unit was not called "SpaceSaver" for nothing: it was small outside and huge inside.
I have not had any problems with the oven being on the same circuit as the refrigerator. My house is fairly new, so maybe that makes a difference.
I've had it about two months. So far, so good.

The toaster oven was probably the biggest negative. It is only wide enough to fit 1 slice of break. Fortunately there is a top burner and a bottom burner so you can stack 2 pieces of bread on top of each other and flip them in the middle of cooking.
I cooked eggs in a basket on the hotplate and it cooked the egg in about 5 or 6 mins.

(More customer reviews)My Wife & I purchased this Oven with the thoughts that with a Brand Name like Black & Decker that safety would be a priority. We were so wrong! This oven has so little heat shielding that using a Professional Chef's Thermometer (I am a Pastry Chef) we measured over 150'F on the side over 200'F on the back and we stopped counting when the top hit 250'F and was still rising. You get easily burned by this unit as even the control panel was hot, over 120'F, the door is very hot and just drops due to the weight and if you try to catch it you will get burnt. I would not place this within 6" of anything and definitely would not keep it under the shelves because if it does not set it on fire the intense heat this generates will destroy the underside. It can also not be placed against a wall unless you have a piece of heat resistant board to keep it from destroying your drywall, or worse yet setting fire to your wallpaper!
Not only due to the hazards this presents but because the controls are not user friendly. You have no idea how long something is going to take, you ask it to toast and it just goes and you have to watch to see how dark it is getting and stop it.
Tomorrow we are bringing it back and we would rather spend 2x the money for another than risk burning down the house.

T-Fal OT8065002 Avante Elite Toaster Oven Review

(More customer reviews)I've had the Avante Elite Toaster Oven for about 6 months now and have used it almost every day since I bought it. I originally bought it thinking I'd mainly use it for toast but after experimenting with different items I found that it can serve as a pretty adequate oven/stove top. I'm far from a gourmet chef so this review is from the perspective of someone who can follow a recipe to make a tasty treat but who has never broasted or flambayed and who doesn't yet know what parboiled means.
As a toaster: Just about excellent. It does the "Toast" function very well. Toast was just the right amount of crunchy. The "Toast" setting also adjusts its toasting time pretty accurately so that if the oven is still hot from having used it to cook something, it will set itself to toast for less time. However I have noticed that if I've used the oven on the "Broil" setting (which gets it VERY hot) I need to remove the items from the oven a little earlier than when it actually thinks it will be done. If I left them in there until the timer went off they wouldn't get burnt or even overly dark, just darker than I personally like. I've also made toasty sandwhiches with the Toast feature. I make my sandwhich on buns or french bread and stick them in the oven, set it to Toast, and they come out toasty and melty like you would get at Quiznos.
As an oven: Excellent. The oven part of the Avante Elite cooks meat thoroughly and fairly evenly. I've cooked chicken, beef, hot dogs, breaded eggplant patties, and frozen entrees. I've also baked pizzas and banana bread. All came out pretty delicious. I usually rotate the pizzas once during cooking because the back end of the oven tends to cook things faster than the front end. The oven itself is larger than it looks. I've been able to fit all the frozen pizzas I've tried (including the fairly large Digiorno pizzas).
As a stove top: Great! I don't know if the manufacturers intended for the top "warmer" to be used as a makeshift stove top but that's what I've used it for many many times. I set the oven to the "Broil" setting (caution, it gets the whole oven very hot, but that's the very reason I use this setting) and place a stove-top safe dish on top and then fry, boil, saute or cook *almost* as I would on a normal stove top. I've fried bacon (using the included baking sheet although the bacon can be cooked inside the oven with the included broil pan) and eggs, cooked spaghetti, sauteed vegetables and tofu and have even tried cooking corn and rice up there. The corn and rice are a bit harder because the water doesn't come to a fast boil as it would on a real stove top so unless you have a lot of time, the corn and rice will have to be cooked elsewhere. The top warmer also is somewhat warped (probably from all the extreme temperature changes it undergoes) and so I had to buy a tiny egg-frying pan (it's so cute! if I'm able to add my pictures to this page, you'll see it) so that the egg would cook evenly. That is, I tried to put the baking sheet down first and then fry the egg on that but the egg just slid to one corner of the sheet and I had to make scrambled eggs that day instead. Those came out pretty good though!
So if you want a great toaster that also does justice to the "oven" part of its name AND works great as a makeshift stove top, this toaster oven is worth the money.

(More customer reviews)I've had B&D toaster ovens in the past and they've always held up well, so when it came for a new one I mostly dismissed the negative comments by others and purchsed this model. Well - unfortunately the negatives reviews are correct. Toast made on the bottom shelf ends up burnt where directly above the heating element, and untoasted elsewhere. But far worse was the rude awakening I received on the 2 month anniversary of my purchase. My attempt to toast a bagel appeared more like a 4th of July celebration when the unit completely shorted, providing me with a nice light show. And not that I'd have any inclination to use it again but it's now dead.
I tried to contact the B&D service number provided with the manual and lo and behold the documented late and weekend hours are no longer valid, so I guess I'll now be spending my work day negotiating for a new unit as opposed to someone else's "repaired" unit. If they're this bad when new I can't imagine what a refurb would be like. And I can't imagine what I'll be paying in shipping charges. BE FOREWARNED!

If you call B&D, they can send you screws for cabinets with a 1.5" deep lip. Our cabinets were 1-7/8" - which does a great job of hiding undercabinet lighting.
The 10-32 mounting screws they use are not available in steel longer than 3". I had to order Stainless Steel 3-1/2" screws from McMaster Carr for $10 delivered. Had B&D changed the design a bit they wouldn't need such long and unavaialable screws or they could have simply used 10-24 screws, any good hardware store would have up to 6" long: 4 for $1.I don't mind having to go to the hardware store to make something work. I do mind when I need to special order something that should be readily available, because of bad design. Undercabinet lighting and the deeper cabinet fronts that hide it have been popular for about 20 years. B&D obviously did not consider this need carefully enough, annoying this customer. A poor design decision.
I look forward to using the product and the counter space we will gain in about a week, when the long special screws arrive.
