(More customer reviews)After much research and thinking, I finally purchased this toaster, believing it would be the best and last toaster I would ever have to buy. It is truly the best toaster I've ever had, and I've had them all! There are some slight drawbacks that I must mention, however:
The two slots on the left sometimes toast more lightly than the right-hand slots, and the toasting can be uneven from top to bottom in all the slots. This toaster takes longer than other brands to do its job, requiring a little "warm-up" time after it has cooled a bit. Also, the slots are not quite wide enough for some breads, such as half-sliced bagels. I honestly don't see how two slices of bread could fit into the optional sandwich basket that is designed to slide into a slot on this toaster.
There are some great features, too: The crumb tray actually catches all the crumbs and is easy to slide out to empty. The toast does not pop up, as in other brands, thereby staying warm for a few minutes until I can get to it. It has a simple numbered dial--the numbers correspond to minutes--and during the toasting time, the toaster ticks--like an old-fashioned kitchen timer. There is no "ready" sound, such as a ding, but the ticking stops with a loud click when the time is up. Also, there is never a time when this toaster is too hot to toast another batch of bread. In fact, it works better when it is still hot.
The design is attractive and would look nice left out on the counter. I keep mine in a cupboard, however, and it is no trouble to get it out every morning and put it back after breakfast. (This is how I've always stored my toasters.) I purchased the yellow, 4-slice model, and it is very pretty. The yellow looks good with my wood cabinets and goes well with everything in my kitchen.
I believe this toaster will never, ever wear out. It is heavy, well-built, and well-designed, inside and out. And, it does toast better than all the other toasters I have owned in the past.

With invigorating colors like canary yellow, purple and petal pink, it will be difficult to decide which Dualit toaster to choose. For the eclectic kitchen full of color and character, the Dualit Vario toaster has extra-wide, pressure sensitive, spring-loaded slots that allow you to use a new type of sandwich cage (sold separately), also by Dualit. With the sandwich cage, you can toast sandwiches inside your Dualit toaster - your gourmet goat cheese and Parma ham sandwich can be placed inside then inserted into the toaster slot. The sandwich cage's drip tray catches any cheese or filling that might fall out during toasting. Also unique about the Dualit Vario toaster is its award-winning ProHeat element, an adjustable thermostat and a Keep Warm function that warms without toasting. Switches control the degree of browning and the number of slots you wish to switch on. After toasting, your toast doesn't pop up (as it does with other toasters) but stays warm until the manual ejector knob in front is pushed up. There's also an adjustable rear foot and a removable crumb tray. About Dualit: It should come as no surprise that the man who invented the Dualit toaster was an engineer. In 1946, Max Gort-Barten produced the original Dualit toaster in his workshop just off London's Old Kent Road. This new toaster soon set new standards and was followed by one used commercially in restaurants. Designed for heavy-duty use, each Dualit Vario toaster is a blend of the simple and highly sophisticated. The patented ProHeat element uses a radical new heat pattern, encapsulated in a specially developed, high performance material, giving it a unique, protective layer. Each toaster is assembled by hand much as it always was - look on the bottom of your Dualit Vario toaster and you will find the assembler's individual mark on the base plate.
